After breakfast, head towards Punakha, making a stop at Druk Wangyal Lhakhang and the 108 stupas along the way. The temple, constructed in Dochula, blends traditional Buddhist culture with modern elements, honoring Bhutanese casualties from the 2003 conflict.
Continue to Punakha, a region steeped in Bhutanese history. Once the capital from 1637 to 1907, it hosted the country’s first National Assembly. Take a brief hike to Chime Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple known for fertility rites attributed to Lam Drukpa Kuenley. Lunch in Lobesa Village precedes a visit to Punakha Dzong, a symbol of Bhutanese unity and heritage. Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung, it’s situated at the confluence of Pho and Mo Chhu rivers. The Dzong remains the winter residence of the Chief Abbot. Overnight at a Punakha hotel.
After breakfast, travel from Punakha to Phobjikha Valley. In Gantey village, explore Gangtey Monastery. Phobjikha is in Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park, a haven for rare black-necked cranes in winter. The area, home to nomadic communities and yak herders, remains remote and untouched. Enjoy lunch, explore the valley, and visit the Black Necked Crane Center. Return to Punakha for the night.
After breakfast, return to Paro with stops at the Royal Botanical Park and the riverside of Parochu for photos. In Paro, visit the National Museum housed in Ta Dzong, showcasing relics, art, thangkha paintings, and stamps. After breakfast, embark on a hike to the iconic Paro Taktsang, also known as the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. This revered Buddhist temple complex is perched on a cliff at 3120 meters above sea level in the upper Paro valley. It’s a significant cultural landmark and a major tourist attraction in Bhutan. Legend has it that in the 8th century, Guru Rinpoche flew on the back of a tigress to this location and meditated in a cave, where the monastery stands today. The site offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, making it an unforgettable experience.
